Who I Am<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

I am McKnight Presidential Chair in Applied Economics, Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Distinguished University Teaching Professor, and Northrop Professor at the University of Minnesota<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From January 2020 to December 2023, I served as one of four co-editors of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics<\/em><\/a>. Prior to that, I served as one of two co-editors of Food Policy<\/a><\/em> from 2015 to 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My research focuses on agricultural economics, applied econometrics, and food policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my research, I have won the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association<\/a>\u2019s (AAEA) Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2007, the AAEA\u2019s Outstanding American Journal of Agricultural Economics<\/em> Article award in 2011, and the AAEA’s Quality of Research Discovery awards in 2014. That same year, I also won the European Association of Agricultural Economists<\/a>‘ Quality of Research Discovery Award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early 2023, I was elected Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My work so far been featured in media outlets such as The Economist<\/em>, The Guardian<\/em>, the New York Times<\/em>, National Public Radio, the Wall Street Journal<\/em>, and the Washington Post<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my teaching, I have won the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences Distinguished Teaching Award for Graduate Faculty in 2018. In 2022, I have won the University of Minnesota’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Graduate and Professional Education, and I was inducted in the University of Minnesota’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tagline for this blog was stolen from Ron Mittelhammer’s 2009 AAEA presidential address<\/a>, “Applied Economics–Without Apology.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
