{"id":10071,"date":"2014-04-10T05:00:26","date_gmt":"2014-04-10T09:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=10071"},"modified":"2014-04-06T14:42:02","modified_gmt":"2014-04-06T18:42:02","slug":"extreme-weather-and-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/10071","title":{"rendered":"Extreme Weather and Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The abstract of a <a title=\"Maystadt and Ecker (AJAE, 2014)\" href=\"http:\/\/ajae.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/early\/2014\/03\/25\/ajae.aau010.short\" target=\"_blank\">great new article<\/a> by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Maystadt and Olivier Ecker in the <em>American Journal of Agricultural Economics<\/em> titled &#8220;Extreme Weather and Civil War: Does Drought Fuel Conflict in Somalia through Livestock Prices?&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A growing body of evidence shows a causal relationship between extreme weather events and civil conflict incidence at the global level. We find that this causality is also valid for droughts and local violent conflicts in a within-country setting over a short time frame in the case of Somalia. <strong>We estimate that a one standard deviation increase in drought intensity and length raises the likelihood of conflict by 62%.<\/strong> We also find that drought affects conflict through livestock price changes, establishing livestock markets as the primary channel of transmission in Somalia.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The emphasis is mine.
