{"id":11306,"date":"2015-09-10T05:00:18","date_gmt":"2015-09-10T09:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=11306"},"modified":"2015-09-06T12:39:01","modified_gmt":"2015-09-06T16:39:01","slug":"the-value-of-relationships-in-kenyan-horticultural-value-chains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/11306","title":{"rendered":"The Value of Relationships in Kenyan Horticultural Value Chains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I had a post discussing contract farming and agricultural value chains yesterday, I thought I should also mention this <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.aeaweb.org\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1257\/aer.20120141\">new article<\/a> (gated;\u00a0click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wrap.warwick.ac.uk\/59370\/1\/WRAP_twerp_1032_macchiavello.pdf\">here<\/a> for an older, ungated version)\u00a0by Rocco Macchiavello and Ameet Morjaria published in the latest issue of the <em>American Economic Review<\/em>, titled &#8220;The Value of Relationships: Evidence from a Supply Shock to Kenyan Rose Exports.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here is the abstract:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This paper provides evidence on the importance of reputation in the\u00a0context of the Kenyan rose export sector. A model of reputation and\u00a0relational contracting is developed and tested. A seller\u2019s reputation\u00a0is defined by buyer\u2019s beliefs about seller\u2019s reliability. We show that (i)\u00a0due to lack of enforcement, the volume of trade is constrained by the\u00a0value of the relationship; (ii) the value of the relationship increases\u00a0with the age of the relationship; and (iii) during an exogenous negative\u00a0supply shock deliveries are an inverted-U shaped function of\u00a0relationship\u2019s age.
