Foods and Food Safety?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another day, another media story in which I weigh in on some food policy-relevant story: I was quoted last week in\u00a0an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/articles\/2015\/12\/11\/chipotle-illnesses-is-safety-the-tradeoff-to-locally-sourced-food\">article<\/a> in <em>US News &amp; World Report<\/em>\u00a0about the potential link between Chipotle&#8217;s focus on &#8220;sustainable&#8221; (i.e., local, non-GMO) procurement practices\u00a0and the nine-state\u00a0<em>E. coli<\/em> outbreak \u00a0linked to food from the same chain fast-food chain, and which has made 52 people sick.<\/p>\n<p>I discussed for a while with journalist Kimberly Leonard, who wanted to know about my own work on a similar relationship, viz. the statistical relationship my coauthors and I have found between <a href=\"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/11158\">farmers markets and food-borne illness<\/a>:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Marc Bellemare, a researcher at the University of Minnesota, has conducted research that suggests an increase in the number of farmers markets is associated with an increase in foodborne illness in that location.<\/p>\n<p>Bellemare cautions, however, that the research doesn\u2019t necessarily show that the food is less safe, and he says one of his theories is that people are mishandling the food, whether leaving meat on the counter too long or leaving produce in the car sitting in the sun for several hours. \u201cThey may have an implicit bias that the food might be better, and may think they don\u2019t have to wash it as thoroughly,\u201d he says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which is a useful reminder that I should probably revise that paper as soon as possible in order to submit it for publication, especially since adding two years worth of data has considerably strengthened results that were already pretty robust.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>USN&amp;WR<\/em> article also quotes my Oklahoma State colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/jaysonlusk.com\/\">Jayson Lusk<\/a>, whose book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0307987035\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0307987035&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=marfbel-20&amp;linkId=YB7O3YU25LNDZV7V\">Food Police<\/a><\/em> everyone should read,\u00a0and who puts it as succinctly and as clearly as possible:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf you want to make products fresh, that means you\u2019re not going to use a preservative or it\u2019s going to be unprocessed,\u201d says Jayson Lusk, president-elect for the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, who has been critical of Chipotle\u2019s marketing practices. \u201cIt does provide a real tradeoff in terms of providing a safe product for the consumer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another day, another media story in which I weigh in on some food policy-relevant story: I was quoted last week in\u00a0an article in US News<\/p>\n<div class=\"more-link-wrapper\"><a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/11524\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Is There a Trade-Off between &#8220;Sustainable&#8221;
