(Updated) (Updated)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From an <a title=\"Fighting Poverty with Economics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/global-development\/2011\/apr\/06\/fighting-poverty-esther-duflo-policies\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> on Esther Duflo by <del><em>The Guardian<\/em>&#8216;s<\/del> IPS News republished by <em>The Guardian<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Doing her PhD at MIT, she was one of the first doctoral students to apply economics to development, linking the two, at a time when there were few university faculties devoted to the subject.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t mean to add to the considerable amount of snark (see <a title=\"Revisionist History\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardrcarr.com\/opentheechochamber\/?p=319\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, for example) but&#8230; Really? In the first development economics class I ever took, back in the late 1990s, I was taught that the first article on development economics was Paul Rosenstein-Rodan&#8217;s &#8220;<a title=\"Rosenstein-Rodan (1943)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/pss\/2226317\" target=\"_blank\">Problems of Industrialization of Eastern and Southeastern Europe<\/a>,&#8221; which was published in the <em>Economic Journal<\/em> in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>Could this mean that Esther Duflo was one of the first doctoral students to apply economics to development at MIT?<\/p>\n<p>Even that is unlikely: the first development economics class I ever took was taught by <a title=\"Jean-Louis Arcand\" href=\"http:\/\/graduateinstitute.ch\/faculty\/directory\/arcand\" target=\"_blank\">Jean-Louis Arcand<\/a>, who received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>(Update: A community coordinator at <a title=\"The Guardian - Global Development\" href=\"www.guardian.co.uk\/global-development\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Guardian<\/em> Global Development<\/a> emailed me to draw my attention to the fact that this was originally a <a title=\"Combating Poverty with &quot;Poor Economics&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/ipsnews.net\/news.asp?idnews=55087\" target=\"_blank\">story<\/a> by IPS News, which <em>The Guardian<\/em> republished.)<\/p>\n<p>(Update: The author of the story comments on how the original story was quickly corrected on the website.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From an article on Esther Duflo by The Guardian&#8216;s IPS News republished by The Guardian: &#8220;Doing her PhD at MIT, she was one of the&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"more-link-wrapper\"><a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/1668\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Esther Duflo, First Development Economist Ever?
