{"id":1684,"date":"2011-04-10T10:30:38","date_gmt":"2011-04-10T14:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=1684"},"modified":"2011-04-11T08:13:55","modified_gmt":"2011-04-11T12:13:55","slug":"mgape-wrap-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/1684","title":{"rendered":"MGAPE Wrap-Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I <a title=\"Midwest Group on African Political Economy\" href=\"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/2011\/04\/midwest-group-on-african-political-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> about on Friday, this weekend was the inaugural meeting of the Midwest Group on African Political Economy (MGAPE), a group that aims at bringing together economists and political scientists working on development policy in Africa.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This first meeting was a success. I presented my <a title=\"The Welfare Impacts of Commodity Price Volatility: Evidence from Rural Ethiopia\" href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1544172\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> on the welfare impacts of price volatility in Ethiopia. Rachel Beatty Riedl, from Northwestern, presented a <a title=\"Transforming Politics, Dynamic Religion: Religion's Political Impact in Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/people.tamu.edu\/~kdionne\/MGAPE\/papers\/riedl_01\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> on the impact of religion on African politics; Jeff Conroy-Krutz, from Michigan State University, presented the sketch of a <a title=\"The Price of a Vote\" href=\"http:\/\/people.tamu.edu\/~kdionne\/MGAPE\/papers\/conroy-krutz_01\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> in which he will explore the industrial organization of vote buying in Uganda; and Harounan Kazianga, from Oklahoma State University, presented a <a title=\"School Feeding Programs, Intrahousehold Allocation and the Nutrition of Siblings: Evidence from a Randomized Trial in Rural Burkina Faso\" href=\"http:\/\/people.tamu.edu\/~kdionne\/MGAPE\/papers\/kazianga_01\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> in which he and his coauthors discuss the results of a randomized controlled trial aimed at studying the effects of school feeding programs and take-home rations in Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I had to leave early, so I missed the last two presentations. The first was by Jennifer Brass, from Indiana University, who presented a <a title=\"Do NGOs Account for Decreasing Legitimacy in Kenya? An Analysis After 40 Years of Independence\" href=\"http:\/\/people.tamu.edu\/~kdionne\/MGAPE\/papers\/brass_01\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> studying whether NGOs undermine state legitimacy in Kenya.
