{"id":2015,"date":"2011-05-12T10:46:48","date_gmt":"2011-05-12T14:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=2015"},"modified":"2011-05-12T10:48:14","modified_gmt":"2011-05-12T14:48:14","slug":"food-prices-remained-stable-in-april-but","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/2015","title":{"rendered":"Food Prices Remained Stable in April, But&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So says the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in the May issue of its\u00a0<a title=\"Global Food Price Monitor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/giews\/english\/gfpm\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Global Food Prices Monitor<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;The FAO Food Price Index averaged\u00a0232 points in April 2011, virtually unchanged\u00a0from the revised March estimate, 36 percent\u00a0above April 2010, but 2 percent below its\u00a0peak in February 2011.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still waters run deep, however, as this apparent food price stability masks a considerable amount of heterogeneity:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;A sharp increase in\u00a0international grain prices in April more than\u00a0offset declines in dairy, sugar and rice, while\u00a0oils and meat prices were mostly unchanged.\u00a0The FAO Cereal Price Index averaged 265\u00a0points, up 5.5 percent (14 points) from March\u00a0and 71 percent from April 2010. The FAO Oils\/Fats Price Index which had fallen by 7 percent\u00a0in March, was nearly unchanged in April. The\u00a0FAO Sugar Price Index averaged nearly 348\u00a0points, down 7 percent (or 25 points) from\u00a0March and 17 percent below its January record.\u00a0The \u00a0FAO Dairy Price Index averaged 229\u00a0points, down 2.4 percent from March. The FAO\u00a0Meat Price Index \u00a0remained stable at a record\u00a0level of nearly 173 points.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the poor in developing countries, whose diets mostly consist of carbohydrates, this is far from good news.
