{"id":2844,"date":"2011-07-18T05:00:20","date_gmt":"2011-07-18T09:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=2844"},"modified":"2011-07-17T12:21:59","modified_gmt":"2011-07-17T16:21:59","slug":"david-sedaris-north-carolina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/2844","title":{"rendered":"David Sedaris&#8217; North Carolina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<em>New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0unearthed this David Sedaris <a title=\"Our Perfect Summer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/archive\/2003\/06\/16\/030616fa_fact?currentPage=all\" target=\"_blank\">short story<\/a> from its archives:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;At some point in the mid- to late nineteen-sixties, North Carolina began referring to itself as &#8216;Variety Vacationland.&#8217; The words were stamped onto license plates, and a series of television commercials reminded us that, unlike certain of our neighbors, we had both the beach\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0the mountains. There were those who bounced back and forth between one and the other, but most people tended to choose a landscape and stick to it. We ourselves were Beach People, Emerald Isle People, but that was mainly my mother&#8217;s doing. I don\u2019t think our father would have cared whether he took a vacation or not.
