{"id":4433,"date":"2011-11-01T05:00:45","date_gmt":"2011-11-01T09:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=4433"},"modified":"2011-10-30T12:39:38","modified_gmt":"2011-10-30T16:39:38","slug":"the-food-stamp-explosion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/4433","title":{"rendered":"The Food Stamp Explosion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking a page from\u00a0<a title=\"Gapminder\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gapminder.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hans Rosling<\/a>, Tufts School of Nutrition associate professor Parke Wilde and his coauthors have developed a fascinating <a title=\"SNAP Dynamics\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0Ao0i9c_1NAzTdFhRSXJqeVFlLVAzdGRDaW0xMGVOb0E&amp;hl=en_US#gid=3\" target=\"_blank\">Google Gadget<\/a> to help visualize the evolution of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), i.e., of the food stamp program. Parke&#8217;s post on the topic is <a title=\"The SNAP Explosion\" href=\"http:\/\/usfoodpolicy.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/snap-food-stamp-explosion.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The SNAP is one of the US government&#8217;s most important programs aimed at helping the poor (and, for those of us who teach principles of microeconomics, it also provides a great in-class example when teaching about budget constraints.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SNAPDynamics.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4435\" title=\"SNAPDynamics\" src=\"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SNAPDynamics-300x149.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SNAPDynamics-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SNAPDynamics-1024x510.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/SNAPDynamics.jpg 1439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>The gadget developed by Parke and his coauthors allows one to track either the number of SNAP participants or the proportion of SNAP participants as a percentage of the population against other indicators &#8212; population or unemployment rate &#8212; for all 50 states plus the District of Columbia over the last 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>For example, looking at North Carolina where I live, I see that the state went from a proportion of food stamp users of 6.3 percent for an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent in 1990 to a proportion of food stamp users of 14.1 percent for an unemployment rate of 10.9 percent.
