{"id":4500,"date":"2011-11-03T05:00:06","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T09:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=4500"},"modified":"2011-10-30T17:01:24","modified_gmt":"2011-10-30T21:01:24","slug":"let-the-little-boys-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/4500","title":{"rendered":"Let the Little Boys Die"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A hard-hitting, must-read Global Dashboard\u00a0<a title=\"Let the Little Boys Die \u2013 Reaction to the 2012 World Development Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globaldashboard.org\/2011\/10\/28\/let-the-little-boys-die-%E2%80%93-reaction-to-the-2012-world-development-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> by David Steven in reaction to the World Bank&#8217;s <em>World Development Report<\/em> 2012&#8217;s claim that &#8220;four million girls and women &#8216;go missing&#8217; each year in developing countries&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So what\u2019s going on? The answer is slightly hard to follow: girls are significantly\u00a0<em>less<\/em>\u00a0likely to die of infectious diseases than boys, but they are\u00a0<em>even<\/em>\u00a0less likely to die of perinatal conditions (in or just after childbirth). So while\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0children benefit as infectious diseases are tackled, girls benefit slightly more than boys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In other words, there&#8217;s no discrimination in play and this section of the report is based on a statistical artefact. Or a red herring. Or a tendentious attempt to beef up a press release (and if the result implies the health of poor girls matters more than that of poor boys \u2013 well, hey ho).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">My conclusion: the 4 million figure is an advocacy stat of the worst kind. Lazy in its execution.
