{"id":9274,"date":"2013-07-11T05:00:40","date_gmt":"2013-07-11T09:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/?p=9274"},"modified":"2013-07-07T20:27:38","modified_gmt":"2013-07-08T00:27:38","slug":"yours-truly-in-the-globe-and-mail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/9274","title":{"rendered":"Yours Truly in the Globe and Mail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine for a second what it would feel like if the New York Times were to mention your work in an article discussing your area of specialization.<\/p>\n<p>For a Canadian, the equivalent feeling is when the <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> does so.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TheGlobeAndMail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9275\" alt=\"TheGlobeAndMail\" src=\"http:\/\/marcfbellemare.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TheGlobeAndMail.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Barrie McKenna <a title=\"Taxpayers Oblivious to the Cost of Farm Subsidies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/report-on-business\/taxpayers-oblivious-to-the-cost-of-farm-subsidies\/article13055078\/\" target=\"_blank\">discussed<\/a> my recent <a title=\"Bellemare and Carnes (2013)\" href=\"http:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/p\/pra\/mprapa\/47629.html\" target=\"_blank\">working paper<\/a> with Nick Carnes in Monday&#8217;s edition of the <em>Globe and Mail<\/em>, in an article that primarily discussed the ideological inconsistencies of the Canadian conservatives when it comes to farm subsidies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[E]conomist Marc Bellemare and political scientist Nicholas Carnes investigated agriculture-related votes from 1999 to 2009 to determine what factors drive the behaviour of politicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one explanation that almost always explains support for agricultural protection is the electoral pressure a legislator faces, i.e., the proportion of her constituents who are farm owners or farm managers,\u201d the authors concluded.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the study determined that pressure at the polls is more important than lobbying and other influences. The result is that farmers wield out-sized influence, even in relatively small numbers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Bellemare and Prof. Carnes point out that farmers are politically powerful because the vast majority of other voters are oblivious to what protecting farmers actually costs them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Barrie&#8217;s article also discusses a\u00a0<a title=\"Tolhurst et al.
