Fellow, Africa Growth Initiative

The Brookings Institution is a private nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and innovative policy solutions. Established in 1916, Brookings analyzes current and emerging issues and produces new ideas that matter – for the nation and the world. Brookings seeks to fill the position of Fellow, Africa Growth Initiative. The position is open until filled.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Global Economy and Development Program at Brookings is accepting applications for a Fellow position within the newly formed Africa Growth Initiative. The successful applicant should hold a PhD in economics or development economics, have a research focus on African economic growth issues and development, and must have at least three to five years of post-doctoral research experience. While the applicant’s specific research program will depend to some extent on the scholar’s interests and background, the applicant should have a deep understanding of critical economic and development challenges facing the region. Among other areas, key research areas might include the following: industrial policy for structural transformation; macroeconomic policy and political economy; agricultural modernization for structural transformation; management of natural resource exploitation for long-term growth; and poverty and social protection in transforming African economies. The applicant must have experience working and/or studying in Africa, with an intimate understanding of both domestic and international economics and politics in African countries. The applicant must also have an established record of publication in professional and/or academic journals and books, and a proven ability to conduct original policy research and analysis. The applicant must be able to undertake research projects, produce journal and book-length monographs, and competently lead issue-focused meetings, conferences, and other events. French language skills are a plus.

SALARY: Appointment will be at the Fellow level, and salary will depend upon the experience and qualifications of the candidate.

Africa Research Fellow

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: The Global Economy and Development Program at Brookings is seeking applications for a group of Africa Research Fellows within the newly formed Africa Growth Initiative. The Fellowships are designed to offer outstanding post-doctoral scholars of African development economics the opportunity to pursue their own independent research on applied policy issues over the course of two years at Brookings. Fellows will be in an excellent position to draw on the resources of scholars at Brookings as well as the extended policy community in Washington, DC, by participating in, and organizing, workshops and conferences at Brookings, and through networking with the broader development and economics community in Washington.

DESCRIPTION: Fellows will work with the Director of the Brookings Africa Growth Initiative on the overall research portfolio, while also pursuing independent, innovative research based on the scholar’s particular interests and background. Key research areas might include but are not limited to: African regional growth issues; agriculture; trade; aid flows and foreign assistance; health; education; commodities and natural resources; and financial services and SME development. SALARY: Brookings will provide a full time salary as well as partial support for staff and research assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should hold a PhD in economics, social science, or related areas, with 1-2 years of post-doctoral work experience preferred. Successful applicants will have experience working and studying in Africa, with an intimate understanding of both domestic and international economics and politics in African countries. Fellows will be expected to work on policy-relevant monographs, books, and/or policy papers, as well as interact with other Brookings scholars, the wider policy community, and both African and non- African media.
